Genuine Signs of the End Times or Last Days

Genuine Bible Truth. It isn’t difficult to find genuine Bible truth. This is especially true of the last days. Don’t be caught out by religious groups that present flawed reading on scriptures.

Are we in the time of the end described by the Bible and briefly mentioned by Jesus?

Because so many people have debunked groups that have put forward less than reasonable ideas on the time of the end it would appear that there are mixed feelings on this topic. Some have used flawed chronology. Some have selected a series of dates when they believed the end would come. Some have tried to draw links from historical texts in the Bible and try to suggest a prophetic significance. Some have selected verses at random from areas of the Bible and somehow tried to apply these to a time.

The result is that many people have worked themselves up believing in a date only to find themselves disappointed.

In the modern day there have been many who have claimed special insight and been so emboldened as to name dates. 1914, 1918, 1919, 1925, 1975, 2000 and more. How the list goes on. Yet the earth is still here and there is no evidence of the Christ coming in the clouds with power and glory.

So are we in the time of the end described by Jesus? In this discussion we will answer this question and demonstrate why we can be sure that we do know the answer.

The following is an in depth discussion of this Bible truth with significant explanation. However in brief we know that we are in the last days due to the following 7 points.

Signs of The last Days.

These are the genuine signs of the last days.

On August 6th  and August 9th 1945, atomic weapons were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The use of these two weapons confirmed that the last days were progressing after heavenly events. [The Last Days began in 1935 when Christ, the white horseman, cast Satan out of heaven and down to this earth.]

Let us look firstly at a section of the Bible that is often quoted without understanding it.

In Matthew chapter 24 Jesus described the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple.

Matthew 24:1,2

And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, See you not all these things? Truly I say to you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another. They shall all be thrown down.

Earlier Jesus had foretold the destruction of Jerusalem and now he added some details regarding the destruction of the temple itself. Today we know how true these words were. Apart from a retaining wall that supports the area where the temple was built, today when you visit the site, there is not a single vestige of the temple remaining.

In Matthew 24:3 we join Jesus and the disciples on the mount of olives looking down at the city.

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?

We can see from these words that the disciples had two things on their minds.

Firstly they wanted to know when the Temple and Jerusalem was to be destroyed.

Secondly they were concerned to know about Christ’s return in Kingdom power and the associated events.

Note: this verse is hotly debated due to the fact that when it is literally translated some of the meanings of the words can be obscured when translated into English.

The B part of the verse is sometimes translated as above and sometimes as follows.

What will be the sign of your presence and of the end of the world?

‘What will be the sign of your arrival and the conclusion of the system of things?’

The word translated as coming/presence/arrival is the word parousia which carries the thought of being present or arriving and staying.  Hence the variety of translations. Jesus was clearly always on the move during his ministry and the disciples were looking forward to Jesus taking kingdom power and some permanence. Hence the question was to the effect that the disciples wanted to know when Jesus would finally return in Kingdom power, this time not here briefly to fulfil a ministry but permanently here in Kingdom power.

The remainder of the verse can also be translated in different ways.

‘And of the end of the world?’

‘And of the conclusion of the system?’

‘And of the end of the age?’

The thought again is that the world of that time will come to a halt when Christ returns in Kingdom power. It will be such a huge event that it will bring the world/age/system of things to a halt. It will be an about turn in human affairs as we all get to see what God has in mind for mankind and we recognize Christ in Kingdom power.

Understanding the questions helps us to understand the answers.

So as stated earlier the disciples wanted to know two things. Firstly they wanted to know when the Temple and Jerusalem was to be destroyed. Secondly they were concerned to know about Christ’s return in Kingdom power and the associated events.

Matthew 24:4-14

And Jesus answered them “Look out that no one deludes you.  For many will come under my name, saying ‘I am the Messiah,’ and delude many.  And you are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not disquieted; for they have to come, but it is not yet the end.  For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in one place and another;  but all this is the beginning of the birth-pangs.  Then they will have you arrested and cruelly treated, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations because of my name.  And then many will be staggered and have each other arrested and hate each other;   and many pretended prophets will arise and delude many;  and, because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will cool; but he who holds out to the end, he will come safe through;  and this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world of mankind, for a witness to all the nations and then the end will come.

What was Jesus actually saying? He describes the usual turn of events on earth in terms of wars, earthquakes, famines and so forth and says clearly ‘see that you are not disquieted; for they have to come, but it is not yet the end.’ Yes, this is situation normal. If people point to wars, earthquakes and famines [The parallel account in Luke mentions pestilences and signs in the nights sky as well.] etc as if they are a sign then Jesus is essentially saying not to listen to these ones. Jesus says that Christians will be badly treated. Even despite this many false prophets will arise to draw off followers and will present misleading messages. So we all are being instructed to be careful when it comes to who we listen to as far as the conclusion of the age is concerned.

However in Matthew 24:14 we note the words of Jesus. ‘and this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world of mankind, for a witness to all the nations and then the end will come.’

So what was Jesus saying? He was saying that there wouldn’t really be anything significant as far as world conditions were concerned. The usual wars and earthquakes etc would be around. There would be lots of people claiming to be prophets and in general a rejection of people with the Christian message. Despite opposition the Christian movement would prosper and spread. In the midst of severe persecution the message of the Kingdom would be preached throughout the earth. Then the end would come.

This in fact came true. In Colossians 1:23 Paul wrote that the good news of Christ had been preached ‘in all creation under heavens.’

These words were written in 62CE. The preaching work had gone throughout the Roman world. They hadn’t actually been taken everywhere in the world as the Americas, China and India didn’t feature in that world. But within the sphere of the first century this was a significant effort.

Arch of Titus
Arch of Titus Records Jerusalem’s Destruction in AD 70

The destruction of Jerusalem followed these words. In 66CE the city was attacked. It was given a reprieve but then in 70CE the city was flattened. General Titus returned with a significant army and dealt a decisive blow to the troublesome Jews and their holy city. Jerusalem and its temple were totally destroyed.

So everything Jesus said in answer to the question the disciples asked relative to Jerusalem came true.

There were no significant increases in wars or earthquakes or famines etc. Life was normal apart from the opposition to the preaching work and the Christians. And, as was normal in the first century there were lots of false prophets with their usual mix of messages. And then the end came. Jerusalem was destroyed. This was significant because it was the spiritual centre of the Jewish  world. In a very real sense the Jewish system of things came to an end.

Now it is interesting to read the rest of Jesus answer to the Apostle’s question. Jesus made no attempt to break up his answer to the three questions. There is obvious overlap between the answers to the three questions.

Matthew 24:15-31

Therefore, when YOU catch sight of the disgusting thing that causes desolation, as spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in a sacred place, (let the reader use discernment,)   then let those in Judea begin fleeing to the mountains.  Let the man on the housetop not come down to take the goods out of his house;   and let the man in the field not return to the house to pick up his outer garment.  Woe to the pregnant women and those suckling a baby in those days!   Keep praying that YOUR flight may not occur in wintertime, nor on the sabbath day;  for then there will be great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world’s beginning until now, no, nor will occur again.

In fact, unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the chosen ones those days will be cut short.

“Then if anyone says to YOU, ‘Look! Here is the Christ,’ or There!’ do not believe it.   For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones.   Look! I have forewarned YOU.  Therefore, if people say to YOU, ‘Look! He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; ‘Look! He is in the inner chambers,’ do not believe it.  For just as the lightning comes out of eastern parts and shines over to western parts, so the presence of the Son of man will be.   Wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.  And then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in lamentation, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

And he will send forth his angels with a great trumpet sound, and they will gather his chosen ones together from the four winds, from one extremity of the heavens to their other extremity.

In verse 15 Jesus refers to ‘the disgusting thing’ referred to in Daniel Chapter 12:11,12.

This is a unique section of scripture. It follows a reference to the end times.

And then Daniel chapter 12 says.

And from the date of the displacing of the regular sacrifice to the putting in of a disgusting thing that is causing desolation is twelve hundred and ninety days.   Happy he who waits and comes up to thirteen hundred and thirty five days.

The reader is asked to use discernment. In other words when we see it we will know it. At the conclusion of this article we will come back to this reference. You will find lots or arguments about what this is. Some have argued that this prophecy may well apply to Jerusalem as well as the end times. However Jesus specifically referenced Daniels writings and this contains specific time references that cannot be applied to both Jerusalem and the end times.

Daniel states clearly that there will be

  1. A specific Date when there is a displacing or curtailing of sacrifice.
  2. 1290 days later a disgusting thing that causes desolation is put into place
  3. For 45 days or until the 1335th day there is desolation.

Jesus added that this would be a time of flight. A time of urgent action on the part of those who discern what this means and is. Jesus made reference to flight from Judea and fleeing to the mountains. The Jews were considered to be God’s holy people and therefore, this apparently refers to the feeling among people who genuinely want to serve God when there is the curtailing of sacrifice. It is something that we need to be ready for. (In the first century, following the initial failed confrontation in Jerusalem, the Christian congregation fled the scene in obedience to direction that Christ had provided regarding a brief opportunity to get away from Jerusalem. Some Bible students suggest that the disgusting thing standing in a holy place refers to the Roman legions with their idol standards. There is some merit in this application however the major application is obviously in the future given that the reference to the writings of Daniel does not directly link given that time periods are referred to.) However those days are cut short. Just 45 days long. Jesus said. ‘In fact, unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the chosen ones those days will be cut short.’

So what happens during these 45 days? Jesus stated that we should expect to see lots of saviors and solutions. Lots of people claiming to know the answers.

But when the 45 days are ended we are told by Jesus. ‘Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.  And then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in lamentation, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.’

Yes Jesus will return in Kingdom Glory and gather in the great crowd referred to already. The chosen ones. ‘And he will send forth his angels with a great trumpet sound, and they will gather his chosen ones together from the four winds, from one extremity of the heavens to their other extremity.’

So what is Jesus telling us?

Jesus is telling us that in the time leading up to Christs’ return the situation on the earth will be pretty much as usual. Wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilence, false saviors etc. But not to be worried. It’s just how it is. That there will be many who will points to signs and claim that they know the truth etc. But not to be misled.

The Apostles asked ‘What will be the sign of your return and of the end of the age?’

So Jesus referred to Daniel and explained that this prophecy in Daniel chapter 12 would stand.

  • The sign of Jesus imminent return would be a ceasing of sacrifice.
  • Then after 1290 days some disgusting thing that causes desolation is put into place.
  • It will survive just 45 days but these will be urgent times on the earth.
  • Then Christs return in Kingdom Power and gathers in the great crowd.

Interestingly Jesus interlaced a strong warning about false teachers in this prophecy. He said as quoted above. ‘Therefore, if people say to YOU, ‘Look! He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; ‘Look! He is in the inner chambers,’ do not believe it.  For just as the lightning comes out of eastern parts and shines over to western parts, so the presence of the Son of man will be.’

Some would claim that Christ’s presence would be invisible. Concealed. That you have to look for it. Its in a wilderness or in a hidden room. That Christ is invisibly present.

Jesus says DO NOT BELIEVE IT. And then he says that it is like lightening. When lightning strikes you don’t have to discern it. It is bright and powerful and lights up the area and is accompanied by a noisy boom. So if someone tells you that Christ is invisibly present then do not believe it. Believe what the Bible says. What Jesus said.

From the foregoing we can determine the final signs of the last days. Jesus answered the disciples question. They wanted to know the sign of his return so he gave them details of the three and a half years leading up to the event itself.

Christ also shed light on the famous prophecy of Daniel chapter 12 because people wanted to know what the words meant that happy was the one who got to the 1335 days. There was no explanation in the book of Daniel. However, Daniel chapter 12 does make the connection to the Lord’s day and so Jesus here provides the additional detail which helps us to understand that it is in fact his return in Kingdom power that will be the happy event for those who hold on for those additional 45 days.

This is the final part of the sign of the last days. We have not seen anything that fulfils this. Yet years later when Christ delivered his Revelations to the Apostle John he added much additional detail. Including what would mark the beginning of the Lords day and the last days.

Are we then in the time of the end described by Jesus?

We know how the last section or the last 3 ½ years will unfold. But have they begun?

When Christ delivered the book of the revelations or the apocalypse to the apostle John he did something very interesting. In chapter 1 and verse seven John reaffirms the fact that when Christ returns in Kingdom power ‘every eye will see him.’

Then in chapter 1 and verse 10 John explains that the visions that he sees happen in the Lord’s day or the last days: the time of the end. So we know that what is contained in the book of Revelation directly pertains to the Lord’s day or the time of the end. What Revelation describes are events that occur during the last days.

In chapters 2 and three there is a description of the condition of the Christian congregations that have developed around the world. Symbolically these are pictured like seven congregations that have all developed different characteristics and these picture the dominant Christian religious organizations on the earth during this time. Each of the congregations has different strengths and weaknesses and within most of these congregations there are honest hearted ones who genuinely are interested in religious truth. However each of the congregations is described as having serious problems to contend with. We will come back to these seven descriptions in a future discussion but by way of reference to the question being discussed in this article we can confirm that all of the varieties of ‘Christian’ faiths around the earth today with all the different beliefs and yet, all calling themselves Christian, confirm the truth is what is described in the opening chapters of the book of Revelation.

The next chapters detail a pause in proceedings as if the court of heaven is being gathered together. It is a gigantic gathering in heaven. Attention is being moved to the earth. What is happening on the earth and how it impacts on men and women of faith and the overall history of the Earth is under scrutiny.

Then we arrive at Revelation chapter 6 and we see action taking place. Four horsemen, often called the four horsemen of the apocalypse ride forth. Each horsemen is said to have an effect upon the earth. Initially we see a white horse and one seated upon it has a bow and a crown and he goes forth on a conquest. This is Jesus. He began his ride in 1935 as the gentile times concluded. His first action was to hurl Satan from the heavens. This action precipitates the ride of the three remaining horsemen. This is also a picture of the resurrected Christ getting ready for his return in Kingdom power at the end of the 1335 days which will mark the conclusion of the period of time that we call the last days.

We can imagine that behind the scenes in heaven there is a lot of things being organized. As we have seen in scripture, Christ returns with his angels. This will be a remarkable event and it is not difficult to imagine how much work must be occurring in heaven to get ready for Christ return and the things that need to be accomplished to break down the works of the devil.

The Horsemen of the apocalypse

The second horsemen rides fourth. This is a red horse. Notice what the Bible tells us about this red horse.  Revelation 6:3,4 And when he opened the second seal I heard the second creature say “Come!” and another horse went out, a red one, with a rider to whom it was given to take peace from earth and that they should slaughter each other; and he was given a great sword.

We notice this reference to war. The rider takes peace away from the earth. Global war is referred to here. However this is not total war in the sense of an ongoing world war. However the 20th century was certainly dominated by the two world wars and the subsequent wars that followed. Does this in itself fulfill this picture? Not necessarily.

The Red Horse Has a great sword that takes away peace from the earth
A Great Sword Takes Away Peace

However notice the concluding words of verse four. “And he was given a great sword.” This denotes the use of a new type of weapon. Initially during World War I there were a number of new weapons and war took on a new feel as it involved more than just soldiers on the battlefield, but this became mature by World War II. It wasn’t just army fighting army but rather nation fighting nation and this was a war, World War II, that was truly a world war that took peace away from the earth. In the skies, on the seas and under the seas in addition to the usual warfare on land, it was literally war on a new scale. Then at the conclusion of this war two atomic weapons were detonated. Truly a great sword. In World War II war moved to a different stage of development with peace taken away from the earth, with mass slaughter and the use of the great sword. This great sword continues to be a threat to the peace of the world and it is doubtless this development of nuclear war and the actual use of nuclear war that introduces the red horse. Remember, the rider of the red horse was given the great sword in order to use it, and the use of atomic weapons in the field of battle is the most significant development in war in modern day history. The threat of nuclear war has taken a sense of peace away from the world. The red horsemen is riding.

What of the next horse? Revelation 6:5,6 read. And when he opened the third seal I heard the third creature say “Come!” And I saw, and there was a black horse with a rider that had a balance in his hand; and I heard what seemed to be a voice among the four creatures say “A quart of wheat for a shilling* and three quarts of barley for a shilling; and do not injure the oil and the wine.”

* Shilling is used by the translator to mean a days wage which is implied in the words.

Anxiety over the cost of living
Anxiety over basic costs is included

So we can see that in the end times the cost of living would be very high in proportion to most people’s wages. Many would be short of food and all would be concerned about the cost of living.

Revelation 6:7-8 continues:  ‘When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say: “Come!”  8 And I saw, and look! a pale horse, and the one seated on it had the name Death. And the Grave was closely following him. And authority was given them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with a long sword and with food shortage and with deadly plague and by the wild beasts of the earth.’

Death Features in the Horsemen
And Death Was Following

Shortages of food, diseases and death on some scale are referred to here. While not everyone is directly affected by these things they do happen on a scale that has some effect on the whole of society.

Pandemics are prophesied to occur as the end unfolds. It is a good plan to have a good supply of food and water on hand. Plan for 14 days. There are many food stuffs that store well and if you quietly put away enough supplies you will be well prepared to quietly cope with coming difficulties. Also note that some pandemics will appear to be over and yet will re-emerge. So stay cautious and stay safe.

24 elders

Since the conclusion of World War 2 fear of nuclear war, concern at the cost of living, the rise of diseases and food shortages has continued. There have also been remarkable advances in science, civilization and communities. Which helps us the understand the key elements of the Bible sign of the last days.

Matthew 7:22 describes the rise of organizations claiming powerful works. ‘many will say to me in that day ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by your name and expel demons by your name and perform many great and powerful things in your name?’

Today many organizations make such claims. Some claim miracles. Others claim huge works. Some claim that they are preaching in that name. Others claim that they are doing many other works.  You wouldn’t have to go far to find ‘Christian’ religions making huge claims about what they are doing or accomplishing in the name of Christ or in the name of Jehovah.

Matthew 25:1-5 describes the religious organizations who claim to be Christian and then says in verse 5. ‘And as the bridegroom [Christs return] was long in coming they all grew drowsy and fell asleep.’

These religious groups are also discussed in Revelation under the heading of 7 congregations. Christian religions have all developed along different lines as seen there. Some are zealous, some are tolerant. Some accept one thing while some accept others. And of course each religion thinks that they are right.

Within each group are those who are clearly genuine and honest in wanting to know the truth.

Jesus says as quoted in Matthew 25:5 that they are simply asleep. Ask about Christ’s return and listen to the conflicting ideas and replies. Asleep to the times we are in they slumber on until the Lord’s return.

The idea of some unmistakable sign of the last days is clearly rejected in the next verse we quote where we can see that people in general see through the miss application of Matthew 24 as quoted earlier in this discussion.

As we read 2 Peter 3:3,4 you may realize that someone you know has said exactly this in response to people misquoting Matthew 24.

2 Peter 3:3,4. ‘in the last days mockers will come with mockeries, going by their own desires and saying “Where is the promise of his return? for since our fathers went to their rest everything has remained as it was since the beginning of creation.”’

Because preachers have misapplied the sign and used verses that simply do not apply they have generates ridicule and mocking. People say ‘there have always been wars and earthquakes and famines….’ And they are correct.  [For example Jehovah’s Witnesses and others  frequently refer to signs and have also referred to dates that have generated some mockery due to the failure of events to unfold as expected.]

It doesn’t change the truth of where we are in the last days. But their voices add to the sign and are an important valued part of the sign that genuine Christians recognize.

Let’s move down the list of genuine signs of the last days.

The number of people claiming to be involved in religions is shrinking. People are sensing the end of organized religion and how true this is.

Revelation 18 describes religion in candid terms. Then in verse 4 we read. And I heard a voice out of heaven say: “Get out of her, my people, for you do not want to share with her in her sins, and you do not want to receive part of her pain.”’

This verse helps us to see that the movement of people away from religion is not entirely self motivated. A voice out of heaven urges the move. Literally we have heard no such voice but, being people of good conscience we all recognize the hypocrisy and double standards that are evident within those organized religions that are more political and commercial entities than genuine believers. We get out as if we have been warned to leave.

What of point 6?

Heightened anxiety among people who are looking to the future?

As the end approaches this will become an increasing concern. Anxiety and fear. Luke 21:26 ‘People will become faint out of fear and expectation of the things coming upon the inhabited earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’

In corresponding references in revelation the Bible describes once reliable institutions becoming weak and feeble. Unable to provide comfort.

Who can argue that life doesn’t have added anxiety today? Specifically as the conclusion of the last days arrives this anxiety will heighten.

Let’s look at the final number on the list.

  7. Daniel 2:42,43

Daniel 2 contains one of the most miss quoted prophecies in the Bible. We see a great image with four different metals. These picture a succession of powers that affected Israel. Babylon, Medo -Persia, Greece and Rome.

Rome being the authority when Jesus was in Israel and the nation was cast adrift by God and its temple destroyed.

The feet of the image are a minute of metal and clay. And with this description comes come statements that we can readily identify.

Daniel 2:41-43. ‘And just as you saw the feet and the toes to be partly of clay like that of a potter and partly of iron, the kingdom will be divided, but some of the hardness of iron will be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with soft clay.   And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong and partly fragile.   Just as you saw iron mixed with soft clay, they will be mixed with the people; but they will not stick together, one to the other, just as iron does not mix with clay’

This part of the image is shown to be the state of the world when Christ returns in Kingdom Power.

In previous times up until the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple in 70CE by the Roman armies under General Titus, the kingdoms that interacted with Israel were strong like metal. The power of the kings was not challenged by their people. Kings held the power of life and death and feudal power was often absolute.

The Media Curb Political Power

Following 1935 there has been a huge shift in power. And especially so as we see the rise of the internet. Governments and authorities are held to account. Even secretive governments fear the internet and the speed with which news stories can spread around the world. Yes governments in general do have something of the strength of the kingdoms that came before but they and now more affected by people ‘the clay’ than ever before.

Where are we then in the stream of time?

In 1935 we entered the last days as the horsemen of the apocalypse began their collective ride. Since that time each part of the sign has become more and more evident.

However this leaves two factors.

Firstly the further ride of the white horse who must ‘complete his conquest.’

Secondly the last 3 and a ½ years mention by Jesus in Matthew 24. Remember Jesus only focused on the time just prior to His return in directly answering the disciples questions.

Since Christ returns in Kingdom power we can only conclude that the ride of the white horse to ‘complete his conquest’ refers to the arrival of Christ in Kingdom power. His picture in among the horsemen simply shows that is return is an inseparable part of the sign. Since we have seen the effects of the other three we will certainly see him return in kingdom power.

What of those interesting words related to Daniel 12 and referenced by Jesus?

Daniel states clearly that there will be

  1. A specific Date when there is a displacing or curtailing of sacrifice.
  2. 1290 days later a disgusting thing that causes desolation is put into place
  3. For 45 days or until the 1335th day  there is desolation.

When you grasp the 7 signs then the truth of what is about to happen becomes obvious.

The very first reference to sacrifice in the Bible shows both a good and a bad sacrifice along with the freedom to sacrifice. This is the account of Cain and Abel. Both offered a sacrifice openly. Abel was apparently a good man whereas Cain wasn’t. But they were still free to offer the sacrifice.

Freedom of religion was enshrined in this account. It is a right all men hold sacred. But soon, it will be severely curtailed everywhere on this planet. And it will remain severely curtailed for 1290 days until some extreme replacement is put in place. Secular will replace religious. Knowing that this is going to happen Christians will worship at home but they will not be free to worship openly. Then at the end of the 1290 day it will worsen.  For 45 days or until the 1335 days are fulfilled, religion will be dead in the community. Even to claim a religious faith will be to invite a violent reaction.

Men will make the claim that the era of God is over.

And then the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Christ will return.

From a heavenly perspective the last days began when satanism was cast to the earth. But what marks the beginning of the last days from an earthly perspective? The great sword given to the horse of war. The use of atomic weapons in Japan took away peace from the earth. Followed by the remaining parts of the sign the world has clearly taken on all of the features of the 7 part sign.

The last part of the end times will be marked by the severe curtailing of religious freedom. For three and a half years this religious freedom will be heavily restricted. Then finally for 45 days at the conclusion of this period there will be the most severe ban on religion and religious ideas. Even to claim a religious idea will bring persecution. But it is simply a matter of 45 days.

The event will be reminiscent of the ban imposed in Babylon on Daniel.

In Daniel chapter 6 the account is explained.

Daniel 6:6-8

Then these controllers and satraps came in a body to the king and said to him “Live forever, King Darius! All the controllers of the empire, the viceroys and the satraps, the courtiers and the governors, have resolved to recommend that the king enact a decree and impose a prohibition that anybody who makes a petition to any god or man except your majesty for thirty days shall be thrown into the lion-pit.  Your majesty is now to enact the prohibition and have it inscribed in written form to be unalterable as an irreversible law of the Medes and Persians.”

The rulers sought to make secular worship or appeals to the king the only acceptable form of worship. For the final 45 days of the period mentioned by both Jesus and Daniel we can expect something along the same lines.

Already we are seeing religious freedoms being limited. Organization after organization will feel the brunt of this force until the 1290 days begins. But those who reach the 1335 days will be remarkably happy.

Christ will return in Kingdom power and all his angels with him at the conclusion of what Jesus called ‘a great tribulation’ which starts in 2031/32.

Then let those secular powers that have mocked God cringe in fear. Let them repent and seek God’s favor. Time will tell what will happen then.

But a great crowd out of all nations will enter into a wonderful time of reconstruction and happiness as the works of Satan are brought to nothing.
